Depression Counselling in Stourbridge
The first step to overcoming depression is recognising that you might be depressed, the second step is to seek help. This may seeking medical support through your GP and it may be therapeutic support through counselling. These two steps can often be the most difficult part of the road to recovery from depression. Whether you feel ready to start counselling for depression, or simply have questions for me, I am more than happy to help.
What are the symptoms of depression?
Depression can be debilitating with its effects including, amongst many others, overwhelming sadness, tearfulness, emptiness, hopelessness and low or no motivation to do anything. People feeling depressed might find themselves withdraw from life if they can't cope and this only exacerbates the depression sending us into a deeper depression. We might lose our appetite or find ourselves comfort eating. We may have trouble sleeping and we might start using unhealthy coping mechanisms.
What are the benefits of talking to a counsellor for depression?
Counselling will provide a confidential space to talk about not only the depression but the effects it is having on us and our lives and then to help develop coping strategies.

Personal issues can often be difficult to talk about, particularly when we feel ashamed of our own behaviour or upset because someone else's behaviour has caused us pain. The benefit of depression counselling is that it provides an environment where these emotions are discussed and explored without fear or judgement.

Treatment for Depression
Common types of treatment for depression include medication and talking therapies such as therapeutic counselling including person-centred counselling and CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy). Preventative measures include regular exercise, a healthy diet and engaging in hobbies and interests that we enjoy.
Talking Therapies for Depression
Depending on the root cause of someone’s depression, people may benefit from a variety of therapeutic approaches when engaging in counselling. This might include the Person-Centred approach, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Psychodynamic therapy.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy - This is commonly prescribed by the NHS, and often involves practical homework to do between sessions to put into practice what you have discussed and learned in each session.
Psychodynamic Therapy - This is a form of counselling that focuses on the events and trauma from childhood. Psychodynamic therapy can help us to understand how these events may have affected us.
Person-Centered Therapy
The person-centred approach will allow the client to explore what they are going through either in the past or in the present to try to gain a better understanding of their feelings and responses to things. An Integrative Person-Centred counsellor will offer a more holistic approach by using other approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and/or Psychodynamic depending on what the client needs at the time.

I am currently offering a free initial consultation, where I will provide confidential advice, discuss the counselling process, and advise on whether counselling is right for you.
What type of depression treatment is right for me?
There is no right or guaranteed treatment for depression as we all respond in different ways to treatments. Whether it is prescribed medication or therapeutic counselling. there is also no ‘quick fix’ for depression and treatments may take a number of weeks or months until the benefit is felt.
